Do Chemical Peels Really Work?

Whenever we recommend chemical peeling to patients who come in for the first time to our Cool Springs Plastic Surgery office, many tend to hesitate. It has largely to do with the word chemical, which is often perceived as caustic or corrosive. But chemical peels can be a very effective method for removing damaged skin and encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin.

How chemical peels work

Generally, chemical peels employ a certain type of chemical solution that peels off the superficial (and often damaged) layers of the skin. Once the superficial layers are removed, skin tone and texture are significantly improved.

Currently, chemical peels come in three forms:

  • Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are the mildest form of chemical peels and they work really well in softening superficial lines and lessening the appearance of moderate age spots.
  • Alphahydroxy acid (AHA) peels such as lactic acid and glycolic acid peels are appropriate for reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles, acne, enlarged pores, and moderate pigmentation issues.
  • Phenol peels are the strongest chemical peels and are suited for deep discolorations that are a result of a certain condition, pregnancy (hormonal shifts), or extensive sun damage. This type of chemical peel is not ideal for individuals with darker skin tones due to the possibility of obvious scarring post-procedure.
