An arm lift, or brachioplasty, reshapes the underside of the arm from the upper underarm down to the elbow by removing excess skin and tightening what remains. Age, genetics, and weight fluctuation cause the upper arms to sag over time, and that laxity cannot be corrected through diet and exercise — the only way to address it is surgically. The procedure reduces sagging skin that droops downward, tightens and smooths the underlying tissue, improves arm shape and definition, and reduces fat pockets in the upper arm.
Surgery is performed under anesthesia at our Brentwood, TN surgical center. Your surgeon removes the excess skin and tissue, tightens what remains, and sutures the incisions closed before bandaging the arms.
At consultation your surgeon evaluates the extent of loose skin and assesses your skin tone, which determines how much can be removed and where the incision needs to sit. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients is often improved as well.
The excess skin and tissue along the underside of the arm is removed and the remaining tissue is tightened and smoothed, redefining the contour from underarm to elbow.
Fat pockets in the upper arm are reduced at the same time. Where skin quality is good and fullness rather than laxity is the concern, liposuction alone may be the better procedure — your surgeon will tell you which applies.
The arms are bandaged and a compression garment is worn around the upper arms to minimize swelling. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are expected and subside over the course of recovery. Your care team provides post-surgical support options to help you through it.
An arm lift is performed under anesthesia and carries the usual surgical risks of infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. The trade-off specific to this procedure is scarring: removing the hanging skin requires an incision along the inner arm, and while it is positioned to be as discreet as possible and fades over time, it is permanent and can be visible with the arm raised. Temporary or permanent changes in sensation along the arm are possible. Fluid collection, delayed healing along the incision, and asymmetry can occur. Smoking impairs healing and raises the risk of wound problems along a long incision, so tell your surgeon if you smoke or take any medications, vitamins, or other drugs.
