Yes, you can have your implants removed — the surgery is called an explant. Sometimes we remove just the implants, and in other cases we remove the implants along with the entire capsule that surrounds them.
Revision surgery addresses concerns with existing implants or improves the result of a previous augmentation — restoring comfort, symmetry, and confidence in the outcome. It relieves capsular contracture, where scar tissue tightens around the implant and causes hardness or discomfort. It replaces implants that have ruptured or begun to leak. It updates size, shape, or material when your preferences have changed since the original surgery. It corrects implants that have shifted out of position or settled asymmetrically, and improves visible rippling or an unnatural appearance. For patients who no longer want implants at all, it removes them while preserving as much natural contour as possible.
Revision is the most individualized breast procedure we perform, because the plan depends entirely on what is being corrected and why. It is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at our Brentwood, TN surgical center, typically taking about two hours, though complex cases take longer. Our surgeons use advanced techniques to work within existing incisions wherever possible and minimize additional scarring.
Old implants are exchanged for new ones — the most common approach for patients updating size, shape, or material, or replacing implants that have reached the end of their lifespan.
The capsule of scar tissue that has formed around the implant is removed, relieving hardness and discomfort. This is often combined with replacing or repositioning the implant.
For patients who no longer wish to have implants, removal can be performed on its own or combined with a breast lift to maintain a natural contour once the volume is gone.
Implants that have drifted from their ideal position are repositioned and the pocket rebuilt, restoring symmetry and improving the overall shape.
Recovery depends on the specifics of your revision. Most patients return to light activity within a couple of weeks. Swelling and bruising are common in the initial healing phase, and final results become visible over the following months. New implants typically last 10 years or more before needing replacement.
Revision is surgery performed under general anesthesia and carries the risks of infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. Because it takes place in a previously operated field — stretched tissue, established scar planes, a pocket that has already changed — planning matters more than in a first-time augmentation, and outcomes are less predictable. Capsular contracture can recur after treatment. Changes in nipple or breast sensation are possible and may be temporary or permanent. Additional scarring is possible, though we work within existing incisions where we can. New implants are not lifetime devices and may need replacement again in the future. If implants are removed without a lift, the breast may look deflated or loose depending on your tissue. Your surgeon will review the risks specific to your history and the correction you need at consultation.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery can both improve breast shape, but they address different concerns. Augmentation adds volume, while a lift raises and reshapes breast tissue that has begun to sag. Some patients benefit from combining the two.
