A breast lift removes excess skin and repositions the nipple to raise sagging breasts, without changing volume. Breast augmentation adds volume with an implant but does not correct significant sagging. Patients with both concerns often combine the two in a single procedure.
Good candidates have breasts that sag or have lost firmness, nipples that sit at or below the breast crease, and are at a stable weight and in good general health. Many patients seek a lift after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss.
Mastopexy raises and reshapes the breast by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple — addressing concerns that diet and exercise alone can’t. It removes stretched skin and raises breasts that have lost firmness after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss; repositions the nipple and areola to a natural height, and reduces an enlarged areola for better proportion; restores balance between the breast and the rest of your frame, often improving how clothing fits. A lift does not add volume — combining it with an implant restores upper-breast fullness in a single procedure.
A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia at our Brentwood, TN surgical center. Excess skin is removed, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and raised, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural height.
Excess, stretched skin is removed and the underlying breast tissue is tightened and elevated, restoring a firmer, higher contour without changing breast volume.
The nipple and areola are moved to sit at or above the breast crease. An enlarged areola can be reduced at the same time for better proportion.
Incision pattern depends on how much lift is needed — from a limited peri-areolar incision for mild sagging to a lollipop or anchor pattern for greater correction. Your surgeon will explain which applies to you at consultation.
A lift raises and reshapes but does not add volume. Patients wanting more upper-breast fullness combine a lift with breast augmentation. Those seeking less weight and volume may be better served by a breast reduction, or by a Mommy Makeover combining procedures.
Discomfort peaks in the first few days and most patients are up and around within 3 to 5 days. You will see your surgeon about five to seven days after surgery. No heavy lifting over 25 pounds, vigorous activity, or straining for three weeks.
Risks of complications are low but do exist. They include infection, bleeding, and potential reaction to anesthetic or sedative medications. Temporary or permanent changes in sensation are possible — numbness and decreased nipple sensation are normal at first and typically return over a few weeks to a few months. Scarring is a necessary part of a breast lift; incision patterns are chosen to place scars where they are least visible, and they fade over time. Many patients are able to breastfeed afterward, but this cannot be guaranteed. Your surgeon will review the risks specific to your anatomy and goals at consultation.
Good candidates have breasts that sag or have lost firmness, nipples that sit at or below the breast crease, and are at a stable weight and in good general health. Many patients seek a lift after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. You should be a non-smoker (or willing to quit well before surgery) with realistic expectations.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery can both improve breast shape, but they address different concerns. Augmentation adds volume, while a lift raises and reshapes breast tissue that has begun to sag. Some patients benefit from combining the two.
