Our surgical team incorporates elements of a breast lift into every breast reduction surgery we perform. Because skin must stretch to fit over larger breasts, once volume is removed that extra skin would otherwise leave the breasts sagging, looking older and deflated. By also addressing the skin, we help our patients achieve breasts that are not only more proportional but also more youthful-looking.
The fat and tissue removed during a breast reduction is gone permanently, so most patients can expect to enjoy their new contours indefinitely. However, several factors can cause a change in breast volume, including pregnancy/breastfeeding, menopause, and significant weight fluctuation. Our surgical team encourages patients to try to maintain a steady weight to ensure that their breasts remain proportional.
While the majority of breast reduction patients decide to have surgery in their 20s and 30s, there is nothing preventing a woman from seeking the procedure in her middle age so long as she remains a good candidate. In many cases, a woman starts to experience more back, neck, and shoulder pain as she gets older, which may finally motivate her to decrease the volume of her breasts. Cool Springs Plastic Surgery recommends that patients wait until at least the age of 18 to have a breast reduction. The breasts continue to grow throughout puberty, so waiting ensures that the breasts have fully developed and our surgeon can create long-lasting, appealing contours. (In some cases, young women who have had the surgery prematurely have seen their breasts re-enlarge.)
Yes, if a patient has different sized breasts, a breast reduction is one solution for creating breasts that match in size. However, for patients who would prefer the smaller breast to match the larger breast, a breast augmentation is the better solution.
Breast reduction surgery can be performed for aesthetic and medical purposes. If you suffer from back and neck pain, skin irritation, numbness and tingling in your fingertips, and shoulder straps that dig into your skin, you are a prime candidate for the relief that comes from breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty reduction. This is one of our most popular procedures, with patients experiencing beautiful outcomes while boosting confidence in their breast size. Both of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Moore and Dr. Sarosiek, have performed hundreds of these surgeries, each unique to the patient’s goals and desired outcomes.
At your consultation, you’ll meet with your chosen board-certified surgeon to discuss your goals, medical history, and the best way to achieve your desired outcome. Your surgeon assesses breast width, height, and projection, and helps determine the final breast size in proportion to your overall body. A Patient Care Coordinator provides a detailed written estimate of surgical fees and helps you select a surgery date and review payment options.
Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and typically lasts two to four hours. The nipple and areola are preserved while excess skin and breast tissue are removed, preserving the best possible circulation. Flaps of skin wrap the breast tissue in a tighter envelope, moving the nipple to a higher level and giving the breast its new contour.
Rest quietly for 24 hours after surgery. You’ll be up and about in a day or two, but avoid heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling for three weeks, and no vigorous exercise for at least three weeks. Numbness in the nipples and breast skin is common for the first six to eight weeks and should subside with time. Scars reach their optimal appearance after a year or two, and breasts settle into a more natural look over time.
Risks of complications are quite low but do exist — infection, bleeding, and potential reaction to anesthetic or sedative medications. Temporary or permanent altered sensation, including numbness, is possible. On rare occasions the nipple and areola may lose their blood supply; if this happens, they can be rebuilt. Scarring takes time to heal and fade. Your surgeon reviews the risks and your medical history at consultation.
Your Patient Coordinator provides a detailed written estimate at your initial consultation, including surgeon’s fee, operating room, and anesthesiologist’s fee, plus financing options.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery can both improve breast shape, but they address different concerns. Augmentation adds volume, while a lift raises and reshapes breast tissue that has begun to sag. Some patients benefit from combining the two.
