About Microneedling

If acne scars, enlarged pores, or rough skin texture persist despite years of skincare, you’re not stuck with them. Microneedling is one of the most effective in-office treatments for improving skin texture from within — refining the look of scars and pores using the SkinPen Precision, the world’s first FDA-cleared microneedling device.¹

At Cool Springs Plastic Surgery, our licensed aestheticians perform microneedling treatments at all four of our Nashville locations — Brentwood, Franklin, Mt. Juliet, and Music Row. Whether you’re targeting acne scars from years ago, uneven texture, or visible pores, we build a treatment plan around your skin and your goals.

What microneedling treats

Most patients come to us for one or more of the following:

  • Acne scars (especially shallow rolling or boxcar scars)
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin texture that feels rough or bumpy
  • Fine lines around the eyes and mouth
  • Stretch marks on the abdomen, hips, and thighs
  • Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
  • Dull, tired-looking skin that needs a reset
  • Loss of firmness from aging or sun exposure
  • Signs of aging on the hands, neck, and chest

If you’ve spent years trying serums, exfoliants, or prescription creams and still see the same texture issues in the mirror, microneedling reaches a layer of the skin that topical products simply can’t.

For patients who need more aggressive resurfacing, our laser skin treatments — including Halo, Moxi, and BBL — may be a better fit, and we’ll tell you which option your skin actually needs during your consultation.

How microneedling works

Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy — uses the SkinPen Precision to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin’s surface. Your body responds by generating fresh collagen and elastin to repair the area, resulting in skin that is denser, smoother, and more even-toned over the following weeks and months.²

This is why microneedling works so well for acne scars specifically. Scar tissue is essentially collagen that did not heal properly. Triggering fresh collagen production helps remodel and soften scarring over time.

The micro-channels created during treatment also unlock a window for enhanced topical absorption. At CSPS, we use this opportunity to infuse medical-grade serums — including PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor) — directly where your skin needs them most, accelerating results and minimizing recovery time.

Microneedling treatment levels at CSPS

We offer four levels of microneedling depending on your skin concerns, sensitivity, and goals.

Standard Microneedling — The foundational treatment. Ideal for general skin improvement — fine lines, mild texture irregularities, and overall radiance.

Advanced Microneedling — Enhanced with topically applied growth factors that amplify your skin’s natural healing response for more dramatic, longer-lasting results.

Microneedling with PRP — For patients targeting deeper concerns like acne scars. PRP is drawn from your own blood, processed to concentrate platelets, and applied during treatment to significantly boost collagen production.

Microneedling with PDGF — Pairs microneedling with topical platelet-derived growth factor, a powerful regenerative compound that stimulates collagen and elastin production while shortening recovery time.

During your consultation, your aesthetician will recommend the right level based on your skin and your goals.

What to expect during your treatment

Microneedling is performed in our office and typically takes 30–45 minutes. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to ensure comfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a light vibration — uncomfortable but not painful. A calming serum and SPF are applied post-treatment. You’ll leave with skin that looks like a moderate sunburn, which typically fades within 24–48 hours.³

A series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is typical for most patients. First improvements in texture and brightness appear within a week, with deeper changes developing over 4–6 weeks as new collagen forms.

Microneedling beyond the face

Microneedling is not limited to facial skin. The SkinPen Precision can treat the hands, neck, chest, and areas of the body with stretch marks or texture irregularities. Watch our aesthetician demonstrate a hand microneedling treatment below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will microneedling get rid of my acne scars completely? Microneedling significantly softens and remodels acne scars. Most patients see meaningful improvement after a series of 3–6 treatments. Whether scars disappear completely depends on the type and depth of scarring. Shallow rolling and boxcar scars respond best. Ice-pick scars and very deep scars often need a combined approach using microneedling plus other treatments like laser. We’ll be honest about realistic expectations during your consultation.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones? Yes — this is one of microneedling’s strongest advantages. Unlike most laser treatments, microneedling doesn’t rely on heat or light energy, so it doesn’t carry the same risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich skin. It’s one of the safest in-office texture treatments for all skin types.

How much does microneedling cost in Nashville? Pricing depends on the treatment level — Standard, Advanced, PRP, or PDGF — and whether you purchase a single session or a package of three. Package pricing is typically more economical for patients planning a full treatment series. Call (615) 771-7718 or book a consultation for current pricing at your closest location.

Does microneedling hurt? With topical numbing cream applied before treatment, most patients describe the sensation as a vibration or light scratching — uncomfortable but not painful. Areas with thinner skin like around the eyes and forehead may feel more intense than others.

Can I get microneedling if I have active acne? We typically advise against microneedling during an active breakout because micro-channels can spread bacteria and worsen the breakout. We’ll work with you to first calm active acne before starting microneedling for scar treatment.

How many microneedling sessions do I need for acne scars? Most patients see meaningful acne scar improvement after 4–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Deeper or older scars may benefit from PRP or PDGF microneedling to accelerate collagen remodeling. We’ll customize the plan during your consultation.

How is microneedling different from a HydraFacial? HydraFacial is a surface treatment — it cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the top layer of skin for an immediate glow with no downtime. Microneedling works at a deeper level to remodel collagen and treat scarring, pores, and texture. Many patients use HydraFacial as monthly maintenance and microneedling as their seasonal deeper reset.

Can microneedling treat stretch marks? Yes — microneedling is one of the most effective non-laser treatments for stretch marks, particularly newer pink or red stretch marks. PRP or PDGF microneedling tends to produce the best results for stretch marks.
