Microneedling: Taking the Beauty Industry by Storm

The buzz about microneedling is out there, whether you have seen it on social media, in the news, or reading a magazine. The idea of thousands of tiny pin pricks to the face may sound as appealing as nails on a chalkboard, but it just may be the most beneficial procedure for your skin.

Microneedling, or “collagen induction,” is a treatment that uses tiny needles to create microscopic, superficial channels in the skin. The process causes a controlled injury which stimulates the formation of collagen and elastin. Still sound like nails on a chalkboard?

This in-office treatment minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, reduces scarring, melasma, hyperpigmentation and improves skin tone and texture. Our patients find that their skin appears healthier and more youthful after these treatments.

The procedure entails minimal pain and downtime. Let’s explore the process.

First, a numbing cream is applied to the patient’s skin 15 to 20 minutes before the procedure. This alleviates any discomfort that may be felt from the procedure. After cleansing, a microneedling pen is used on the skin’s surface. This pen contains a disposable tip comprised of a specific number of sterile, medical grade, miniscule needles. These needles cause micro punctures in the skin that create a small wound, which in turn builds additional collagen and elastin. This skin stimulation is what improves lines, wrinkles, spots, scars, pores, etc.

Once the treatment is completed, a patient’s skin may appear slightly red. Patients may also experience temporary swelling, dryness and/or mild flaking one to three days following the treatment.  These side effects typically dissipate over the next 24 hours.

Although you may be able to start seeing an outcome after one treatment, for maximum results, we suggest patients complete a series of at least three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.
